Putting Mulch on Garlic Shoots 21/5

Today a few of the team headed out early to Ballan. And, like true farmers, we stopped off for relaxed times of coffee and vegie pasties before starting work at 9:30am. The mulch was delivered by Andrew from local Ballan produce store Crossroads Trading. Big ups to Crossroads for the generous service and delivery. Champs….

Ballanisters Unite for Planting! 7/5

Our lovely site on Planting Day! After doing a little raking to give a flat-ish surface, we began to put our little babies to bed (planted garlic).  We began painstakingly measuring out distances between bulbs (approx 10 -15cm apart) but then became guns at it and instinctively placed them in the right spots. Then we…

Breaking of the Bulbs 6/5

The night before our planting day, we met up together at Adaline and Jose’s house for delicious food (um, hello pumpkin custard…!), some wine, some tequila, oh and some good old fashioned breaking of the bulbs. We separated all our four types into cloves and into boxes. We also made a mess of Adaline and…

Mushroom Compost 1/5

Ben and Adaline headed for the breezy hills of Ballan and added a trailer load of mushroom compost to the five garlic beds, then dug them (and the sheep poo) into the soil. Thanks Ben’s Dad for helping out with the vehicle and the drive 🙂

Laying Down Some Sheep Poo 23/4

Sheep poo, which was kindly piled up for us by the farm’s owner Mohan, was laid out across the beds at a leisurely pace one warm Saturday afternoon.

Excavatin’ 17/4

Not a plough in site and rumours of an excavator led us to go for a rotary hoe to dig up the mat of couch grass . What seemed like an insurmountable task turned into a pretty successful day. Those of us  with the biggest muscles pushed/pulled/heaved the rotary hoe to dig up the rows…

Ph Test! 17/4

We did the pH test a couple of times in two different spots and came up with some low -ish scores of 5, suggesting the soil was a bit on the acidic side.  The pile of very mature sheep poo was pH of 6. Conclusion: get yer compostin’ boots on, we’re gonna need to add…

2/4 Visiting Our Site: Couch Grass is Our Friend…

We came out for our first visit to check out the property. We marked out the rough positions of the rows, talked about how we’d deal with the Couch grass  and did some soil Ph tests. Lovely grass to lay down on, but not so great for growing garlic. Looking north towards Ballan town and…
